Here's an opportunity to see Yiddish movies (subtitled in English) that you haven't seen over and over and over. They're a delight. "Jolly Paupers," made in Poland in 1937, features Dzigan & Shumacher, the greatest comedy duo ever to appear in Yiddish entertainment, in a hilarious "get rich quick" scheme. You'll laugh `til your sides ache.

The Bernard Wexler Lecture on Jewish History 2008
FINDING THE JEWISH SHAKESPEARE: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF JACOB GORDIN
with author Beth Kaplan and featuring readings by Actors Barbara Rappaport and Norm Seltzer
Monday, September 15, 7:30 p.m. DC Jewish Community Center 1529 16th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036 ADMISSION: FREE
In her new book, author Beth Kaplan, great-granddaughter of Jacob Gordin, greatest of Yiddish playwrights and icon of the Yiddish stage, set out to explore Gordin's true character and creative achievements. Shedding new light on Gordin and his world, Kaplan describes the commune he founded and led in Russia; his rise among Jewish New York's literati; his masterworks, including Mirele Efros and The Jewish King Lear; and his feud with Abraham Cahan, powerful editor of the Forverts. Kaplan's book recaptures the Golden Age of the Yiddish Theatre and the dynamic cultural life of Jews on New York's Lower East Side. Kaplan is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. An actress and writer, she teaches memoir and personal essays at Ryerson University and the University of Toronto.
Kaplan's talk, based on the highlights of her research into Gordin and her own experiences in delving into the little-known past of this great writer, will also include a short selection of readings from some of Gordin's greatest works by actors Barbara Rappaport and Norm Seltzer. Barbara Rappaport studied with the legendary Stella Adler and will be appearing in Theatre J's upcoming production in October of "Honey Brown Eyes." Norm Seltzer has had a distinguished career acting and directing in professional and community theaters. He has had a love of the Yiddish theater since the time, at the age of four, when he attended a Yiddish play and babbled so perfectly in Yiddish that an elderly gentleman gave him a one-lb. bar of chocolate!
This year's Wexler Lecture, held annually in memory of Bernard Wexler and his passion for and knowledge of Jewish history, is presented in partnership with the 16th Street J's Leo and Anna Smilow Center for Jewish Living and Learning. It is a part of the Hyman S. and Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival. Dr. Morris Faierstein, on Translating Aaron Zeitlin
Sunday, May 11, 2008, 2:00 p.m. JCC of Greater Washington 6125 Montrose Road, Rockville MD
Yiddish of Greater Washington presents a reading and lecture by Dr. Morris M. Faierstein, editor and translator of the recently released Poems of the Holocaust and Poems of Faith by Aaron Zeitlin. Dr. Faierstein will discuss both Zeitlin and his work as well as the issues involved in translating the poems into English. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
Aaron Zeitlin (1898-1975) was one of the major literary figures of interwar Poland. He was a poet, playwright, editor and critic. He was president of the Yiddish PEN Club and with his close friend, Isaac Bashevis Singer, edited Globus, a literary journal, from 1932-1935. In the summer of 1939, Zeitlin was invited to come to New York to supervise the American premiere of one of his plays. The outbreak of World War II let him stranded and unable to return home. He spent the rest of his life in New York. His writings, particularly his poetry, expressed his sense of despair and mourning for the loss of his family and society. Many poems describe his guilt at having survived the destruction of his whole world. Though not conventionally religious, Zeitlin was very interested in spirituality and mysticism, and his poems reflect this interest. He was a major talent who has not received the attention that the quality and quantity of his literary output deserves.
